My MTV: Casting Director Jenny looks back

Categories:  Casting Directors, Theme of the Week

When MTV kicked off in 1981, “Video Killed a Radio Star” by The Buggles was the first video to ever be played on the network. How amazing and ground breaking it was to see a music video TV for the first time!

I always wanted to work at MTV. I faxed tons of resumes in just get my foot in the door. Even before I knew my niche was casting, I really wanted to get behind the scenes in some way shape or form.

My attempts didn’t work at first. I tried to be an intern in college, and when I graduated, I tried again to enter as an entry level employee. Bottom line: I never stopped trying to find a place for me here at MTV.

Then a former coworker passed along my resume to a producer. All of a sudden, I was hired to cast an VJ Contest. I found 4 amazing young people out of thousands from across the country. It was a great opportunity and I didn’t want to past this chance up.

After the contest was over I was hired on a full-time basis! I was so happy – I finally made it! I really love working here and I will never forget my experience.

And now you are writing and helping all of us. btw, I so very well recall “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Even I was a kid then – the original MTV generation. :) Thanks for an article that should help many readers realize the importance of NEVER GIVING UP! ~ Janet

Determination is the key word in this article, and DETERMINATION is my teacher. I’ve always been a very determined person.
