Acting in Soap Operas: Starting point or major career maker?

Categories:  Acting Tips, Casting Directors, Theme of the Week

A soap opera is an ongoing, episodic work of fiction, usually broadcast on television or radio. Soap operas are popular among all genders, and demographic groups or regions all over the world.

You are VERY lucky if you are a first-time actor and land a reccurring role on a soap. You could make a name for yourself on soap operas and learn to hone your craft like Susan Lucci.

If you’ve had some reality TV experience, you can jump to a soap opera in the blink of any eye. You’ll really learn what its like to memorize tons of lines.

Soap operas can really teach you about the industry: How to work long production hours with a smile on your face, how to be a part of an ensemble cast (aka a huge amount of actors, extras, producers, and writers), and how to be the best actor or actress you can be each and everyday!

Last year I took a course with a wonderful casting director named Bob Lambert who told me he wanted me as an extra on All My Children. I remember not having my glasses amd having to memorize lines and being confused about blocking. When he called me i n after 2 days, I thought that he was going to shake his head and was prepared for the worst. Instead he encoraged me and said he would like to put me in as an extra. I was in an accident right AFTER that so it never materialized. Perhaps this contest is my second chance.
