Film Genre of the Day: Musical

Categories:  Daily Advice

MUSICAL - A film in which several songs sung by the characters are woven into the narrative to advance the plot or develop the characters. Musical films use lavish background scenery that are impractical in a theater, but they contain theatrical elements, and actors perform their numbers as if there is a live audience watching. Recent musical films include original productions like Across the Universe and remakes of Broadway shows like Mamma Mia!

I remember the first musical I watched when I was 14 and I loved it. Moulon Rouge-not sure if I’m spelling that right-but ever since that movie I have loved watching musicals!! Chicago is another favorite of mine as well.

The musical that had a major impact on me had to be West Side Story with the Sharks and the Jets, I used it later on in my career to teach Romeo and Juliet to my ninth graders.

Watching musicals that are films do appear to make you think you are actually watching a theatre performance sometimes. However, I’m not a big fan of musicals because they can have a bit too much singing in them.

Musical that has a great impact on me is Dream Girls. I watch that movie over and over again. I never get tired of it.
