Sometimes, reality TV shows can launch your career. Take Derek Tabacco, a featured millionaire from the Millionaire Matchmaker NYC season. Derek was outspoken and a little too much a New Yorker for Patti Stanger. He made a name for himself on this show and leveraged his fame. If you’re a Lifetime television addict like me, you’ve probably seen the hit reality series Dance Moms.  While it’s very entertaining to watch, parents of aspiring dancers and actors probably wonder if putting their child in the world of reality TV is a good career move.  On one hand, it is fantastic exposure.  These young dancers from Pittsburgh are now known because of the national exposure that reality TV provided. As you may have seen in one episode, Chloe was even cast in a music video.  That opportunity may not have come her way had she not been part of a well-produced television series. Submitting your photos for a reality casting can be a major factor of whether or not you’ll get a phone call from a Casting Director.  Try to be smart about submitting the right photos for each casting you apply for.  If the casting call is looking for actors, then you should submit a headshot.  If they’re looking for everyday people and no acting experience is required, then it’s ok to send an everyday photo that you feel you look good in. A lot of people ask me how to get cast on reality TV shows, or how do I find people for different castings. A lot of the people I find are people who would never expect to get a call from a Casting Director.  There are so many reality shows out there these days that we all want to find people who have something different to offer.  I never find the people I am looking for overnight.  I wish it was that easy.  It takes a lot of time, research, and a ton of cold calling.  I get a lot of referrals by word of mouth. Many non-actors hope to be on a reality show these days to promote their businesses. I am currently casting a new show for professional people that probably never dreamed of being on TV.  Of course everyone is excited about the opportunity when I first call them.  They think about the free publicity and the money they could possibly make from being on TV.  However, I don’t think everyday people realize that making a TV show is a long process: The casting alone could take months. Move over American Idol, there’s a new singing competition airing this spring.  The Voice, set to premiere tonight at 9/8c on NBC, is a new vocal competition series in search of the most talented voice. Judges include  Christina Aguilera, Cee Low Green, Blake Shelton, and Maroon 5′s Adam Levine. Over the past decade we have witnessed the incredible birth of the medium of reality TV: Bursting with international popularity, and showing no sign of decline, we’re trying to get to the bottom of this phenomenon. Even the SAT’s are posing questions about this sociological movement. With hundreds of shows ranging from DC Cupcakes to The Jersey Shore, there’s no limit to reality TV: the only credential is that you be yourself and that you bring something completely unique to the table–be it a fake tan and a penchant for house music, or a culinary expertise and a willingness to compete on camera . The series has been filmed already and it’s set to air sometime in the spring. If you have dreams of being on a popular Reality TV  Show, there are a few things to be aware of. All the major network reality shows–  The Real World, Survivor, Biggest Loser, American Idol–hold group auditions in the earliest phase of their audition. Manypeople show up to the auditions in order to be time efficient: the casting directors interview people in a group setting.  They call in 5-10 people at a time and the casting director goes around the circle to ask each person 2-3 questions. On Thursday December 9^th The Bad Girls Club held an audition for selected girls from NYC. I tagged along with a friend for moral support and to share my story with you! The casting was held at a production studio in the trendy Chelsea neighborhood, the room was infested with girls in high heels and too much makeup…who clealrly felt special to have been chosen to attend round 1 auditions.
