Why Extras Shouldn’t Fade into the Background

How many times have you heard the quote, “There are no small parts, only small actors”? I truly believe that is the case.

Having worked in extras casting, I know the importance directors have put on finding just the right actor for a non-speaking role. You may think it’s insignificant, but I’ve spent hours and late nights searching through headshots for the right person.

I’ve also had moments where I was sent back twice with rejected choices because no one fit the image the director had in his or her head for the part.

A year and half ago I worked on a film for HBO called Taking Chance, that will be premiering this Saturday at 8pm. It’s a beautiful story starring Kevin Bacon, that follows an escort taking a fallen soldier’s body home.

The film has an emotional core that is defined more by the scenes it presents than the dialogue surrounding them. It was for this reason that the extras became a big part of the storytelling.
