Tonight is the night: After 17 years and 3,775 episodes, (whoa!), as host of The Tonight Show, Jay Leno steps down – passing the torch to Conan O’Brien.

Leno’s last episode on Friday night was much like others, full of jokes and some of his signature comedic pieces. The audience greeted Leno with what had to be the longest—and most touching–standing ovation of his career.

While there’s no doubt that many are sad to see Leno go, Conan fans can’t wait for him to take over & get “behind the desk.”

Jay Leno & Late Night Changes

Tonight marks the last night that Jay Leno will host his hit NBC late-night talk show, “The Tonight Show.” As of Monday, June 1st, Conan O’Brien will take over the spot. O’Brien’s replacement on “Late Night,” Jimmy Fallon, will begin an online version of his show nightly at 12:30 a.m. this fall before premiering on air in March or April. Yes, she may be Julia Roberts’ fresh-faced niece, but don’t think Emma relies on her family connections to get a leg up in showbiz. In fact, last night on Jay Leno, she admitted to Julia’s costar Paul Giamatti that she hasn’t even seen their new flick Duplicity yet!

Nobody automatically becomes the next Oprah Winfrey or Ellen Degeneres. There’s no auditions scheduled for newcomers to host on network television in the best time slots. So where did the big money maker hosts come from? They definitely earned it from the ground up. Here are 2 common ways that TV hosts get started:

Comedy: It’s a natural progression to go from stand-up comedy to hosting, since many talk shows start with comedic monologues. This fits perfectly for hosts such as Jay Leno, Ellen Degeneres, Jon Stewart (seen here in 1996), and Conan O’Brien. All are known for their witty zingers and ability to make the audience laugh!

Can you believe it’s been 15 years since Jay Leno started hosting The Tonight Show?

Well, apparently Jay and NBC feel like it’s time for a sea change: Jay is going primetime with a new 10 o’clock slot every weeknight!

While fellow late-night host Conan O’Brien takes over The Tonight Show, Jay’s going to stick to a similar format, but now he’ll be competing against shows like CSI: Miami and Law & Order: SVU. Jay’s definitely a familiar face, but can he hold his own against primetime programming?
