InstantCast Exclusive

The Examiner’s Mary Montanari loves her soap operas… so when she spotted InstantCast’s Soap Opera Week, she interviewed our editor Isabelle Dungan to find out more about InstantCast!

Mary wrote a great article about InstantCast and how soap operas can boost your acting career. Check out this excerpt!

InstantCast, according to Dungan, functions as a sort of virtual talent agency and she believes that landing a role on a daytime drama can deliver a decent income and also serve as a springboard for actors who wish to take their talent to the next level to do just that. Think Demi Moore or Eva Longoria and you will immediately realize what Dungan is talking about!

Daytime Drama? It Takes More Than Acting

I think actors and people, in general, don’t understand the difficulty and demands of the daytime drama industry. There’s a stereotype that the actors aren’t very good and the dialogue is worse.

For those actors that think working on a soap opera will be easy, I have some unfortunate news for you. It won’t be. Here’s what you should really expect:

1. Lots of memorization. Unlike movies that take months of shooting or primetime television that averages 8 days of shooting for a 60 minute episode, soap operas shoot one full episode every day.

2. You don’t have many takes to get it right. There is usually only one rehearsal or more that blocks the scene and then you have a couple of takes to get it right.

I’ve got 3 more tips that you must have! Click here to read them!

Acting in Soap Operas: Starting point or major career maker?

A soap opera is an ongoing, episodic work of fiction, usually broadcast on television or radio. Soap operas are popular among all genders, and demographic groups or regions all over the world.

You are VERY lucky if you are a first-time actor and land a reccurring role on a soap. You could make a name for yourself on soap operas and learn to hone your craft like Susan Lucci.

If you’ve had some reality TV experience, you can jump to a soap opera in the blink of any eye. You’ll really learn what its like to memorize tons of lines.

Soap operas can really teach you about the industry: How to work long production hours with a smile on your face, how to be a part of an ensemble cast (aka a huge amount of actors, extras, producers, and writers), and how to be the best actor or actress you can be each and everyday!
